ASTM C518 Heat Flow Meter Method Thermal Conductivity Testing and Laboratory Equipment Sizing

Quick Answer: ASTM C518 uses a heat flow meter apparatus to measure steady state thermal conductivity of insulation. The correct laboratory setup depends on specimen size, plate temperature range, heat flux range, and cooling water flow control. Silver Automation Instruments supplies flow meters, pressure transmitters, and paperless recorders for ASTM C518 test rigs.

ASTM C518 is the standard method for thermal conductivity testing of foams, mineral wool, polyurethane board, and other insulation products. A test setup has two flat plates. One plate is heated, the other is cooled. A heat flux transducer measures the heat flow through the specimen. Thermal conductivity is calculated from specimen thickness, plate area, temperature difference, and measured heat flux.

Most engineers skip the auxiliary loop. Cooling water temperature stability, water flow rate, and clamping pressure all affect repeatability. A stable cooling loop gives a stable cold plate. That is where flow measurement and process recorders become important.

Key Equipment in an ASTM C518 Test System

A complete benchtop ASTM C518 system includes the hot plate, cold plate, heat flux transducer, PT100 sensors, a cooling circulator, and a data logger. Larger floor standing systems add a chiller, a water flow meter, a pressure transmitter, and often a compressed air purge line for moisture control.

Specimen size drives the plate size and heater power. Benchtop devices often accept 300 mm x 300 mm specimens. Floor standing units accept 600 mm x 600 mm specimens. Thickness ranges from 5 mm to 100 mm on many commercial systems. Temperature range is usually -20 °C to 70 °C for building insulation work. Some pipe insulation testers run hotter.

How to Size a Heat Flow Meter Test Rig

Start with the thermal conductivity range of your samples. Most insulation materials fall between 0.020 W/mK and 0.060 W/mK. Heat flux for a 25 mm thick mineral wool board at a 20 K temperature difference is about 32 W/m2. That is calculated from Q/A = k x ΔT / d. For k = 0.040 W/mK, ΔT = 20 K, and d = 0.025 m, the result is 32 W/m2. A 300 mm x 300 mm sample gives about 2.9 W of total heat. In practice you size the heat flux transducer higher than this, often 0 to 500 W/m2 or 0 to 2000 W/m2, because some tests run thinner samples or higher temperature differences.

Cooling water flow is the next sizing point. Benchtop ASTM C518 units typically need 2 to 5 L/min of water or water glycol mix. Floor standing units may need 8 to 10 L/min. Pipe size is usually DN10 or DN15. Pressure before the needle valve is normally 1 to 4 bar. Without measured flow, plate temperature can drift and the heat flux signal gets noisy.

Flow Meter Selection for the Cooling Loop

For cooling water measurement we recommend an electromagnetic flow meter. A DN10 or DN15 electromagnetic flow meter with PTFE lining handles tap water and glycol mixtures. Accuracy of 0.5% of reading is enough for this application. The output should be 4-20 mA HART so the signal feeds a PLC or a paperless recorder. Silver Instruments supplies compact electromagnetic flow meters for DN10 and DN15 lines. Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us for a DN10 electromagnetic flow meter because the circulator flow was drifting and the cold plate temperature moved by 0.3 °C. We have also supplied ASTM C518 test labs in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

orks better. Typical purge flow is 0 to 50 standard liters per minute. A thermal mass flow meter measures mass flow without needing separate pressure and temperature compensation. Silver Instruments thermal mass flow meters output 4-20 mA and can be configured for air, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide.

Pressure and Temperature Instrumentation

Cooling water pressure before the valve should be logged. A 0 to 10 bar pressure transmitter with 4-20 mA HART fits most benchtop and floor standing systems. The cold plate temperature is usually measured with a PT100 sensor. Silver Instruments also offers paperless recorders with 8 or 12 channels. The recorder logs water flow, water pressure, plate temperatures, and ambient temperature on one screen. A 1 second sample rate is fast enough because the plate reaches steady state over minutes, not seconds.

Common Sizing Mistakes

Here is the thing. A laboratory may pass the plate uniformity check but still get poor repeatability because the cooling water flow has no measurement. One mistake is selecting a flow meter that requires long straight pipe runs. Lab benches have tight piping. A compact electromagnetic flow meter can handle limited straight run better than many turbine meters. Another mistake is forgetting glycol compatibility. If the chiller uses a 30 percent glycol mix, the meter liner and electrodes must be compatible. PTFE and stainless steel electrodes work well. A third mistake is not recording data during the full test. Thermal drift can happen at hour three. A paperless recorder gives you the data trail to see that drift.

Recommended Instrument Package for ASTM C518 Rigs

For a benchtop ASTM C518 system with a 300 mm x 300 mm specimen, we suggest a DN10 electromagnetic flow meter, a 0 to 10 bar pressure transmitter, a PT100 temperature sensor, and a 4 channel paperless recorder. For a floor standing system with a 600 mm x 600 mm specimen, use a DN15 electromagnetic flow meter and an 8 channel recorder. If the rig has a gas purge or compressed air line, add a thermal mass flow meter with a 0 to 50 standard liters per minute range.

FAQ

What is ASTM C518 used for?
ASTM C518 measures steady state thermal conductivity of insulation using a heat flow meter apparatus. It is common for foam, mineral wool, and building insulation testing.

What specimen size does a typical ASTM C518 machine need?
Most benchtop units accept 300 mm x 300 mm specimens. Larger floor standing units accept 600 mm x 600 mm specimens. Thickness often ranges from 5 mm to 100 mm.

Do I need a flow meter on the cooling water loop?
Yes. Cooling water flow stability affects cold plate temperature. A DN10 or DN15 electromagnetic flow meter with 4-20 mA HART output gives a reliable signal for control or recording.

Can a thermal mass flow meter be used in an ASTM C518 system?
Yes, for gas purge lines or compressed air. For cooling water use an electromagnetic flow meter. For gas flow use a thermal mass flow meter sized to the purge line flow range.

How do I request a quote?
Send your specimen size, temperature range, cooling water flow rate, and pipe size to Silver Automation Instruments by phone or Whatsapp. The contact details are listed above.
