What is Coriolis Flow Meter: Direct Mass and Density Fluid Sensor Principles

Quick Answer: A Coriolis flow meter directly measures mass flow and fluid density within one sensor. It needs no separate temperature or pressure compensation for mass. Silver Instruments supplies inline meters from DN03 to DN300 for liquids, gases, and abrasive slurries.

In practice, you get kilograms per hour, tonnes per day, and density in kg/m³ on a single transmitter display. This meter is often the first choice when you need custody transfer accuracy or you handle fluids with changing composition.

Direct Mass Flow Measurement Without Compensation

Standard volumetric meters need density correction for mass. A Coriolis meter uses vibrating tubes and the Coriolis force to measure mass flow directly. When fluid passes through one or two oscillating tubes, it creates a tiny phase shift. Two PT100 sensors track tube temperature. The transmitter converts the phase shift into mass flow in kg/h or lb/min. There is no need to guess density at changing process conditions.

Silver Instruments CMF series meters achieve mass flow accuracy of 0.1% to 0.15% of rate for liquids and 0.25% for gases. We have tested many units on diesel, palm oil, liquid CO2, and hot bitumen at 200 °C.

Density and Temperature from the Same Sensor

Besides mass flow, the meter measures fluid density by analyzing the natural frequency of the vibrating tubes. A denser fluid lowers the frequency. The onboard DSP converts this into density with typical accuracy of 0.5 kg/m³. Combined with a built-in PT100, you get density at reference temperature. This lets you detect product interfaces in pipelines. A chemical plant in Indonesia uses it to switch between solvent and water without extra density analyzers.

The same meter outputs volumetric flow as a calculated value. So one CMF meter replaces a flow meter, a densitometer, and a temperature transmitter. Fewer pipe spools, fewer leak points.

Why Engineers Pick Coriolis for Hard-to-Measure Fluids

Here is the thing: fluid conductivity, viscosity changes, and Reynolds number do not affect the measurement. You can switch from measuring heavy fuel oil at 200 cP to light naphtha at 0.4 cP without recalibration. A lubricant blender in South Africa runs a single CMF-020 meter on four different base oils. No K-factor changes needed.

Coriolis meters also handle entrained gas better than many people think. Models with MVD transmitters can keep measuring even with 2% to 5% gas volume fraction. We have seen this on a paint filling line where air pockets were unavoidable.

Construction and Materials for Real Industrial Sites

Silver Instruments offers wetted parts in 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C22, or duplex stainless steel. Tube wall thickness is calculated for process pressure up to 345 bar. Flanges follow ASME, DIN, or JIS standards. We supply explosion-proof transmitters with ATEX Zone 1 and IECEx certification. Outputs include 4-20 mA HART, pulse, Modbus RTU, and digital RS485. For remote monitoring, you can add a wireless adapter on sites in the Middle East.

Installation is straightforward but needs zero stress on the process connections. We recommend DN15 to DN50 meters with a flexible hose connection on filling machines. A food factory in Vietnam uses 40 pieces of DN08 micro-Coriolis meters for aroma dosing. Each meter reports mass flow and density every 20 ms.
